The Mauritius Sugarcane Industry Research Institute (MSIRI), under the Mauritius Cane Industry Authority (MCIA) has technical autonomy to conduct Research and Development (R&D) as per the MCIA Act. An R&D Committee advises the Institute on research orientations and on technical matters relating to its functions. The R&D objectives of the MSIRI are reappraised every five years to be in line with agricultural policies and a constantly evolving cane industry. Its fundamental goal is to increase sugar productivity and profitability per unit area.

 

The laboratories of MSIRI are well equipped with the latest state of the art technologies and offers hands-on training in a number of different fields. Its Library contains an extensive collection of journals, reports and books covering a wide range of subjects, particularly the cane industry. It has four experimental stations representative of the different agro-climatic zones of Mauritius.

 

The staff of MSIRI is regularly called upon to form part of Boards and Committees to provide views on subjects related to agriculture, research, tertiary education and other sectors. It undertakes consultancies pertaining to sugar cane and participates in international collaborative projects.
